About The Island In Tucson
The Island in Tucson is an 11 acres desert sanctuary located in the Sonoran Desert on the west edge of the Saguaro National Park, traditional land of the Tohono O'odham people. It is situated at 35 minutes drive from downtown Tucson.
This project is an initiative by Olivier Dubois-Cherrier, a mixed French-Caribbean visual artist, who felt in love with the desert and the Tucson community after having lived a nomadic existence. Emily Gray-Wollard who is a visual artist, feminist activist and studying the science of psychology at University of Artizona manages with Olivier the domain where they both live and work.
The Island in Tucson is a recent project started during summer 2020; it is a place of stay, of respect for natural and cultural heritage, of reclaiming oneself, of art making and of thinking about a new paradigm. The desert is a peaceful and resourceful place where kindness and gratitude surge .
What will become The Island in Tucson in the future? We do not know precisely yet. It is difficult to enclose the project about The Island in a definition. “A definition is something that is finished and cannot change or debilitate unless we would like to change of definition,” wrote Henri Bergson. We are free from doubt that Olivier and Emily will be spending the next decades making this site an uncommon project, where art, sharing, staying, growing food and sustainable living can coexist harmoniously.
